What is Sciatica & How Do You Treat It?

Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back down through the buttock and into one or both legs. It happens when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body. It forms from several nerve roots in the lower spine, runs through the hip and down the back of the thigh, and then branches out to supply the muscles and skin of the lower leg and foot.

Because the nerve is so long, pressure at almost any point along its path can cause symptoms. At Tri-States Chiropractic in Dubuque, IA, sciatica is one of the most common reasons patients come to see Dr. Peter Lynch.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is a symptom of an underlying problem rather than a condition on its own. The most common causes include:

  • A bulging or herniated disc in the lower back pressing on a nerve root
  • Bone spurs on the vertebrae that narrow the space around the nerve
  • Misalignments in the lower spine or pelvis that place stress on the nerve
  • Tight or irritated muscles in the buttock, such as the piriformis muscle
  • Long periods of sitting, poor posture, or repetitive lifting at work

Less often, sciatica can be related to conditions such as diabetes, or to pressure from a growth near the spine. That is why a thorough examination matters before any treatment begins.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica symptoms vary depending on where the nerve is being irritated. Common signs include:

  • Pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down the back of the leg
  • A sharp, burning, or electric sensation in the leg
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg, foot, or toes
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Pain that gets worse when sitting, standing for long periods, coughing, or sneezing

Sciatica usually affects one side of the body. For some people the pain comes and goes with activity, while others live with constant, chronic back pain and leg pain.

Chiropractic Care for Sciatica in Dubuque, IA

The goal of chiropractic care for sciatica is to find what is putting pressure on the nerve and correct it, rather than only covering up the pain. Dr. Lynch begins with a complete chiropractic exam of your spine, hips, and nervous system to pinpoint the source of your symptoms.

Depending on what the exam shows, your care plan may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to restore proper motion and alignment in the lower spine and pelvis and reduce pressure on the nerve
  • Massage therapy with our licensed massage therapist to relax tight muscles in the lower back, hips, and buttocks
  • Stretches and exercises you can do at home to support your progress between visits
  • Posture and lifestyle guidance to help prevent sciatica from coming back

Our approach to chiropractic care is natural and non-invasive. We want to help you avoid unnecessary medications and surgeries by treating the underlying cause of your pain.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit at Tri-States Chiropractic follows a clear process:

  1. New patient forms. You can fill out your intake forms ahead of time to save time in the office.
  2. Consultation. You will sit down with Dr. Lynch to talk about your symptoms, your health history, and your goals.
  3. Chiropractic exam. Dr. Lynch performs a hands-on exam to see exactly what is going on. X-rays are taken if needed.
  4. Report of findings. We explain what we found and recommend a treatment plan to help you reach optimal health.
  5. Treatment. You can choose to receive your first adjustment the same day.

Nothing is done without a full explanation and your consent.

Simple Stretches That Can Help

Along with your care in the office, gentle movement can help ease sciatic nerve pain. Ask Dr. Lynch which of these are right for you:

  • Knee-to-chest stretch: lie on your back and gently pull one knee toward your chest, holding for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Seated figure-four stretch: sit in a chair, cross one ankle over the opposite knee, and lean forward slightly to stretch the hip and buttock.
  • Pelvic tilts: lie on your back with knees bent and gently flatten your lower back against the floor to engage your core.
  • Short walks: light walking keeps the spine moving and can reduce stiffness from sitting.

Stop any stretch that makes your leg pain worse, and let us know so we can adjust your plan.

When Should You See a Chiropractor for Sciatica?

If you have pain, numbness, or tingling that travels down your leg, it is a good idea to get checked sooner rather than later. The longer the nerve stays irritated, the longer recovery can take.

Some symptoms need emergency medical care right away, including loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin area, or sudden severe weakness in the legs.

For most people with sciatica, chiropractic care is a safe, drug-free place to start. Dr. Lynch and our team have helped many patients in the Dubuque area get back to work, sports, and everyday life without living in pain.
